B-Series Set-Up & Preventative Maintance

The most effective tool to prevent future service calls is proper setup and preventative maintenance.

Here are a few important DOs & DON'Ts:

  1. DO review the User Guide.
  2. DO pull gun cart out straight away from machine.
  3. DO make a full pull occasionally to ensure correct timing of machine. (This can also correct machines that appear to be out of time from multiple partial pulls and loose tube.)
  4. DO check all filters occasionally.
  5. DO perform maintenance on all gas engines per their owner's manuals.
  6. DO winterize your machine . . . simply empty all drain valves on metal parts. (Polyethylene Tube will not be damaged by freezing.)
  7. DON'T pull gun cart out faster than 3 mph, and DON'T stop suddenly.
  8. DON'T tow machine faster than 10 mph
  9. DON'T disconnect factory installed plumbing until you have performed troubleshooting tips; all machines are factory tested and plumbed correctly.

Bellow Topics

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the bellows will not fill.

Check the following:

  • Ensure that the ON/OFF valve on valve block is in the "ON" position.
  • Check that Speed Control Knob is turned to a full open position.
  • Make sure screen/filter is free from rust, corrosion , or any restrictions
  • Make sure the pilot valve stem has made contact with the shut off rod. The valve stem has to be shifted to the far right in order for the bellows to fill.
  • With the stem in the far right position there should be no pressure in the line running from the top of the pilot valve to the front port of the valve block. To check for pressure turn water supply off. Remove plastic line that runs from top of pilot valve at the point where it is connected to the front of the valve block. Carefully turn the water back on and with the pilot valve stem shifted to the far right, there should be no water coming through the line. If line is pressurized the pilot valve is bad or is plumbed incorrectly.
  • Carefully open the drain valve in the tee coming from the Bellows. If there is a good flow of pressurized water coming out of this drain, then the line to the bellows is clogged.
  • If your unit is equipped with a quick exhaust valve, check to see if water is running through it. If water is running through the quick exhaust valve and not filling the bellows, the quick exhaust valve needs to be replaced.

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the bellows will not fill and water is running from the discharge hose.

Check the following:

  • Carefully remove the tube from the elbow beside the high low valve. If pressurized water is coming from this line, valve block is faulty and should be repaired or replaced.
  • If your unit is equipped with a quick exhaust valve, check to see if water is running through it. If water is running through the quick exhaust valve and not filling the bellows the quick exhaust valve needs to be replaced.

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the bellows will fill but will not exhaust

Check the following:

  • Check for obstructions or kinks in the exhaust drain line
  • Make sure the pilot valve stem has made full contact with the pawl adjustment plate. The valve stem has to be shifted to the far left in order for the bellows to exhaust.
  • With the pilot valve stem shifted to the left, the line from the top of the pilot valve to the front port of the valve block should have pressurized water in it.
  • To check for pressure, turn water supply off. Remove plastic line that runs from top of pilot valve at the point where it is connected to the front of the valve block. Carefully turn the water back on and with the pilot valve stem shifted to the far left, there should be water coming through the line. If line is not pressurized, the pilot valve is bad or plumbed incorrectly.
  • If the pilot valve is working correctly, the valve block or the quick exhaust valve may need to be replaced or repaired.
  • On rare occasions, the bellows has been known to accumulate sand from the water supply causing the bellows to be unable to collapse.

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the bellows will fill but drains too slowly

Check the following:

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the bellows cycles but the spool will not wind in the tube

Check the following:

  • Note: First check to ensure that the drive pawl is dropping into the slots on the spool ring.
  • Is the hold out rod lowered into the run position?
  • Is the hold out rod deformed so that it cannot be lowered enough?
  • Check that the drive pawl moves freely (oil, grease).
  • Is the drive pawl broken?
  • Has the drive arm moved on the spool so the drive pawl will not engage the slots in the spool ring?

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the drive pawl moves spool ahead but spool rolls back with pawl as bellows exhausts

Check the following:

  • The anti-reverse pawl is missing or broken
  • Check to see if the hold out rod allows the anti-reverse pawl to engage the spool ring slots.
  • Check that the anti-reverse pawl moves freely (oil or grease).

P.E. Tube Topics

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the tube will not unwind on pull out

Check the following:

  • Check to see if the pawl hold out rod is placed in the hold out position.
  • The pawl hold out rod is deformed so that it cannot raise pawls to a disengaged position.
  • One or both of the pawls have gotten below the hold out rod.
  • The spool brake adjusted too tightly.
  • The tube has become crossed or tangled from coasting on pull out.

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the tube is loose on the spool and / or the level-wind appears to be out of time.

Check the following:

  • The brake is too loose so that the spool will coast when slowing down and stopping upon tube pull out.
  • Tube has been towed out too fast and / or stopped too quickly (this causes the spool to coast or spin while tube is stopped). The level-wind will appear to be out of time.
  • Entire length of tube is seldom or never pulled all the way out. A small amount of inadvertent coasting may occur each time the tube was pulled out. This accumulates after time, and results in a loose tube with the appearance of a mis-timed level-wind.
  • The sprinkler arc is set so that the sprinkler cart will be propelled forward by the force of the water being applied. If the sprinkler arc is set more than 180°, a countering force will be applied to keep tube tight.
  • The pawls have been disengaged while the unit was in operation, allowing spool to coast back and loosen tube.

Ag-Rain TroubleshootingWhat to do if the water supply does not shut down to the gun cart when the run cycle ends (the sprinkler keeps working)

Check the following:

  • The selector valve on the water flow control valve is in the on position
  • The shut off bar is stopping the mechanical operation of the unit before the water shut off valve can actuate. The stem in the valve body may have become corroded and is too stiff to shift easily. (This can usually be freed up by applying dish soap to clean.)
  • The water lines to and from the control valves may be kinked or clogged.
  • Removed the tube from the top of the shut off valve. If there is no pressurized water coming from the control valve while it is in the "OFF" position, it is not plumbed correctly or is defective.
  • Check to see if the diaphragm valve is defective. To check: Have the water control valve in "OFF" position and your water shut off valve in the "RUN" position. Remove the line from the faceplate of the diaphragm valve. If there is pressurized water coming from the tube then the diaphragm valve is bad.
